Top Giants News

  • Giants' Ford Proctor: Traded to Giants

Proctor was traded to the Giants on Monday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The Giants were looking for catching depth and, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, were willing to part with pitcher Jeremy Walker.

  • Giants' Brandon Belt: Held out Monday

Belt is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Dodgers.

Belt rarely starts against left-handed pitchers, so it should come as little surprise that he is sitting out Monday with southpaw Andrew Heaney on the bump for the Dodgers. Darin Ruf will start at first base in Belt's place.

  • Giants' Luis Gonzalez: Records steal in win

Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with a hit-by-pitch and a stolen base in Sunday's 4-0 win over the Cubs.

Gonzalez is batting .273 in 10 games since the All-Star break, and he's added a home run, two doubles, three RBI and four runs scored in that span. The outfielder appears to be the Giants' top option in left field while Joc Pederson (concussion) is on the injured list. Gonzalez is slashing .280/.347/.416 with nine steals, four homers, 29 RBI and 24 runs scored in 66 contests overall.

  • Giants' Carlos Rodon: Shuts down Cubs

Rodon (9-6) earned the win during Sunday's 4-0 shutout of the Cubs, allowing two hits while striking out 10 in seven scoreless innings.

In what may have been a final audition prior to Tuesday's trade deadline, Rodon completely shut down Chicago's offense -- he permitted singles in the first and fourth with neither baserunner making it past first base -- and retired the final 10 batters he faced, five via strikeout. The hard-throwing lefty fired 64 of 98 pitches for strikes with 15 of the swinging variety, and he concludes July with 53 strikeouts in six starts to pull within four of MLB leader Gerrit Cole at 158 on the season. If Rodon remains a Giant, he's slated to take the mound again next weekend against Oakland.

  • Giants' Jorge Guzman: Active for Double-A club

Triple-A Sacramento activated Guzman (elbow) from its injured list Thursday and assigned him to Double-A Richmond.

Guzman debuted for the Double-A club Friday, working one inning while giving up one earned run on one hit and one walk. The 26-year-old right-hander previously had a cup of coffee in the majors with the Marlins in 2020 but has been sidelined for most of the 2021 and 2022 seasons due to right elbow injuries.

  • Giants' Melvin Adon: Comes off IL

Triple-A Sacramento reinstated Adon (shoulder) from its 7-day injured list Tuesday and reassigned him to Single-A San Jose.

Adon has faced a long road back from right shoulder surgery, which he initially underwent following the 2020 season. He was sidelined for the entire 2021 campaign before making his debut with the Giants' rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate June 7 as part of a rehab assignment. Over his nine appearances between the ACL and the Single-A club, Adon has struck out 12 while allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits and six walks across 9.2 innings.

  • Giants' Daniel Tillo: Rehabbing in Arizona

Tillo (undisclosed) began a rehab assignment July 21 for the Giants' rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate and has struck out two while allowing two hits and one walk across 3.2 scoreless innings over three appearances.

Tillo has resided on Triple-A Sacramento's injured list since April 18, two days after he joined the Giants organization on a minor-league deal. He looks to be nearing the finish line in his recovery from the unspecified injury and should join the Giants' top affiliate at some point within the next couple of weeks.

  • Giants' Logan Wyatt: Activated from IL

Double-A Richmond reinstated Wyatt (undisclosed) from the 7-day injured list Wednesday and assigned him to the rookie-level Arizona Complex League.

Wyatt initially began a rehab assignment with the rookie-level affiliate July 7, and he'll end up sticking around in Arizona since Richmond didn't have an available roster spot for him. Over his 44 plate appearances through 14 games in the ACL, the 24-year-old has slashed .220/.273/.220.

  • Giants' Tanner Andrews: Rehabbing in ACL

Andrews (undisclosed) has struck out five over 3.2 scoreless no-hit innings over three appearances since beginning a rehab assignment with the Giants' rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate July 21.

The appearances in the ACL were Andrews' first of the season, as he's resided on Triple-A Sacramento's injured list throughout the campaign. The 26-year-old right-hander could be reassigned to another affiliate once activated, as he has yet to pitch above the Double-A level in his five professional seasons.

  • Giants' Evan Longoria: Begins running progression

Longoria (hamstring) said he'll start a running progression Sunday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Longoria was diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring strain after landing on the injured list last week, and his quick return to running is an encouraging sign for his recovery. The veteran third baseman is still likely at least a week or two away from rejoining the Giants and is officially without a timeline for his return.

  • Giants' Wilmer Flores: Heads to bench

Flores is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Flores' move to the bench ends a stretch of 12 consecutive starts for the 30-year-old. Tommy La Stella will step in at second base in place of Flores, who should continue to have a regular spot in the middle infield while both Thairo Estrada (concussion) and Brandon Crawford (knee) are on the injured list.

  • Giants' Brandon Crawford: Rehab assignment begins Tuesday

Crawford (knee) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Crawford began a running program this week and will play five innings in Sacramento on Tuesday. He'll likely be able to ramp up his workload Wednesday and will be in the mix to rejoin the Giants as early as Thursday against the Dodgers. The team has a scheduled day off Friday, so manager Gabe Kapler said that the club could wait to activate Crawford until Saturday. Dixon Machado and Jason Vosler will serve as the Giants' top two options at shortstop while Crawford remains sidelined.

  • Giants' David Villar: Sitting against righty again

Villar is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Villar has now sat out each of the past three times the Giants have faced a right-handed starting pitcher, so manager Gabe Kapler may be viewing the righty-hitting rookie as a short-side platoon player at this time. Once Evan Longoria (hamstring) is cleared to return from the injured list, Villar could be in danger of being optioned back to Triple-A Sacramento.

  • Giants' Joey Bart: Sits after three straight starts

Bart is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Austin Wynns will step in behind the plate for Bart, who went 2-for-10 with a solo home run while starting in each of the past three contests. Though Bart is currently operating as the Giants' No. 1 catcher, he could fall into more of a timeshare by the end of the week if Curt Casali (oblique) is cleared to return from the injured list.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Lands on 7-day IL

Estrada was placed on the 7-day concussion injured list Sunday.

Estrada was struck in the head by a pitch Saturday and will be unavailable for at least the next week as he goes through the concussion protocols. Brandon Crawford (knee) was already on the injured list, so the Giants elected to acquire Dixon Machado from the Cubs to fill in at shortstop for the immediate future.

  • Giants' Tobias Myers: Loses 40-man spot

The Giants designated Myers for assignment Sunday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The minor-league right-hander will cede his spot on the Giants' 40-man roster to infielder Dixon Machado, whom the San Francisco acquired from the Cubs on Sunday. After being traded himself from Cleveland to San Francisco earlier this month, Myers made two appearances for the Giants' Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento. He'll likely stick around with Sacramento if he goes unclaimed upon being exposed to waivers.

  • Giants' Dixon Machado: Shipped to San Francisco

The Giants acquired Machado from the Cubs on Sunday in exchange for minor-league pitcher Raynel Espinal, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Machado was subsequently added to the Giants' major-league roster and will start at shortstop and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Cubs, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Thairo Estrada was placed on the 7-day concussion IL on Sunday, so the Giants opted to trade for Machado since Brandon Crawford (knee) is also on the shelf. Machado has hit well at the Triple-A level this year with a .312/.402/.394 slash line in 86 games, and he's now poised to see most of the reps at shortstop for San Francisco until one of Estrada or Crawford is cleared to return.

  • Giants' Donovan Walton: On IL at Sacramento

Walton (undisclosed) was placed on Triple-A Sacramento's injured list earlier this week, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Walton's injury in the minors comes at a tough time for the major-league squad, which is now down Brandon Crawford (knee) and Thairo Estrada (head). The nature of Walton's injury is unknown, and he won't be able to return until the latter part of next week at the earliest, though it's unclear if the Giants will still have a need at shortstop once he's healthy.
