  • Panthers' Baker Mayfield: QB competition close early

Neither Mayfield nor Sam Darnold has pulled away from the other over the first few days of training camp, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.

Mayfield has had the higher highs, per Gantt, but Darnold thus far has been more consistent. While Mayfield faces a steeper learning curve after having been acquired via trade in July, his Thursday session was the sharpest from either quarterback to date. This competition may take a while to resolve, but Mayfield is the consensus favorite to eventually beat out Darnold as Carolina's Week 1 starter under center.

  • Panthers' Sam Darnold: Keeping pace in QB competition

Darnold has been more consistent than Baker Mayfield over the first few days of Carolina's training camp, Darin Gantt of the team's official site reports.

Gantt points out that Darnold likely has benefited from having more time in the team's system than Mayfield, who was acquired via trade in July. Mayfield thus far has shown more upside but less consistency. While Mayfield is the consensus favorite to win Carolina's quarterback competition, Darnold won't make it easy to do so.

  • Panthers' Jaycee Horn: Off PUP list but still day-to-day

Horn (foot) was removed from the active/PUP list Monday, but coach Matt Rhule said the cornerback is still day-to-day, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.

Horn will be eligible to practice at any time now that he has been removed from the active/PUP list, but it sounds like the team will continue to take a cautious approach with the 2021 first-round pick as he works his way back from a broken foot suffered last September.

  • Panthers' Ian Thomas: Practicing to start camp

Thomas, who previously carried an ankle injury this offseason, caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Sam Darnold in Wednesday's practice session, Ellis L. Williams of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.

Thomas has been cleared to practice after tending to a high-ankle issue during June's mandatory minicamp. While Thomas should see a decent amount of snaps with Carolina's starting unit this season, he's more of a blocking tight end than teammate Tommy Tremble, who enters his second season with comparatively higher fantasy utility than Thomas.

  • Panthers' Shaq Thompson: Moved to PUP list

Thompson (knee) was placed on the Panthers' active/physically unable to perform list Wednesday, Ellis L. Williams of The Charlotte Observer reports.

Thompson is still eligible to return and participate in the preseason at any point after his official placement on this list. The 28-year-old linebacker underwent a minor knee surgery earlier this offseason, but he is still expected to return by the start of the regular season. Thompson ranked second on the team in total tackles (104) over 14 games last year, and he figures to once again play a large role in the middle of Carolina's defense in 2022.

  • Panthers' Jaycee Horn: Placed on PUP list

Horn (foot) was placed on the active/PUP list Wednesday.

Horn will begin training camp on the PUP list for "precautionary reasons" after he reported some soreness following Tuesday's conditioning test. The cornerback broke his foot Week 3 last season and was forced to miss the remainder of the year, but he's expected to be ready to go for the 2022 campaign. Horn can be activated from the PUP list at any point during the preseason.

  • Panthers' Shaq Thompson: Dealing with knee injury

Thompson (knee) is expected to be placed on the active/PUP list to start training camp, Joseph Person of The Athletic reports.

Thompson had a minor surgery on his knee and is expected to be available for the beginning of the regular season. Head coach Matt Rhule said Monday that Thompson had a "little cleanout" of his knee and should be back in a couple weeks, making it likely he'll be ready to go for Week 1. The linebacker will be eligible to return to practice and play in preseason games at any point leading up to the regular season.
